Meth Numbers Shock Potter County

Sheriff Mike Shumate says locally made meth numbers are down... But that doesn't mean the problem is going away. Sheriff Mike Shumate says locally made meth numbers are down... But that doesn't mean the problem is going away.

Potter County is the number one county in the state for methamphetimine users...according to a recently released study. Startling news that surprises the Potter County Sheriff.

The Sheriff tells me he can't believe his county is number one... And while he admits there are problems, he also says they are doing everything to get drugs out of the area.

When we told Sheriff Mike Shumate about the report, he says there is no way that can be accurate.

He says, "I find that hard to buy. We have a number of methanphetimines problems in potter county yes, but to say we have more than any other county in Texas is hard for me to swallow. Travis, Bear, El Paso, Tarrant all those counties are sometimes 10 times larger than Potter County how could we have more methanphetimine users? That would mean everybody in Potter County is on methanphetimines."

Shumate says locally made meth numbers are down... But that doesn't mean the problem is going away.

"It's economics. You can't make as much methanphetimine in a little shack out here in the country as some guy in mexico with a 2 million dollar lab can make."

While Shumate says they can't control meth coming to the county, they are staying one step ahead of the dealers to ensure they don't stay in the area.

"We teach our guys consistently, what to look for, what are the bad guys doing. Our narcotics guys are out there mixing and mingling with the finding out what they are up to, and our patrol guys are looking for those people."

The Sheriff tells us that taking drugs off the street is their main priority.
