This weekend while many American families were out for one last vacation before the official end of summer, some families here in Amarillo had to cut their trips short.

The Amarillo Independent School District scheduled classes today.

A state law passed last year requires texas schools to start on August 27th.

After that, schools are free to make their own schedules. Well, parents of kids in AISD are not pleased with their new schedule.

"It affected our plans for the weekend, we went to the lake and we had to come back early. So I think it's terrible that the kids have to go to school," said Cynthia Pfeiffer.

Another AISD parent, Todd Marshall, said "I'm totally opposed to it. I wish they would have been out of school today. They're going to be out of school for Columbus Day, I think it is, next month and that's not even a national holiday, this is Labor Day, they should be home with their family."

AISD is not the only district to hold classes.  Highland Park and Clarendon also had school.

An AISD spokesperson told us that to her knowledge, Amarillo students have always been off on labor day, until today.
