U.S. Atty. General's Ouster Sparks Celebration

Fired New Mexico U.S. Attorney David Iglesias is more than glad to see Gonzales go. Fired New Mexico U.S. Attorney David Iglesias is more than glad to see Gonzales go.

Gonzales's goodbye is sparking a celebration for one area ex-prosecutor. He lost his job, but Iglesias can now claim a moral victory over the outgoing head of the U.S. Justice Department. "They maligned us and slandered us by saying we weren't doing a good job. I got pushed out because I didn't play ball with the state Republican party here."

Political expert Rick Parrish says "the concern over the firing of  these 8 U.S. attorneys was that they were fired not because they weren't prosecuting cases, but because they weren't following the Bush administration's political directives."

Iglesias says Gonzales failed to protect prosecutors from political interference. "We all thought would be insulated from political pressure and that didn't happen. And it's just a real shame because that's not what the american justice system is all about." He now feels vindicated, and is planning a private party with fellow fired prosecutors in December, to mark the one year anniversary of the scandal.

"We're gonna meet at an undisclosed site and we're gonna have a celebration." Iglesias says he's writing a book about what happened to him...set to arrive on shelves in April. President Bush must now nominate Gonzales's replacent, who will require Senate approval.
