Illegal's May Not Find Refuge in Local Churches

"We can do whatever is legal for helping people, but nothing that is illegal," says Pastor Jose Gutierrez . "We can do whatever is legal for helping people, but nothing that is illegal," says Pastor Jose Gutierrez .

Some Amarillo pastors say they won't go as far as one Chicago church did to protect illegal immigrants.

Federal agents arrested and deported an undocumented woman Sunday in California after she spent a year in sanctuary at a Chicago church.

Pastor Jose Gutierrez says he's always looking to aid illegal immigrants who seek his help, but he draws the line at sheltering them from the law.  "We can do whatever is legal for helping people, but nothing that is illegal," he says.

Gutierrez notes actions that defy national laws defy the bible as well. He says he encourages illegal immigrants who come to his church to seek legalization by following laws already in place.
