Character Matters for Claude Football

Claude football has been through some tough times lately.

Two years ago, they forfeited the season after only four games. They forfeited because they lost too many players for academic and discipline reasons.

Then last year they hired Coach Michael Pointer. A Perryton native, Pointer wanted to change more than just the play on the field.

Claude did play 10 games, but it was for an outlaw schedule which means there were no playoffs and no district.

Claude is back in class 1A football, and Pointer is implementing a character building program to help his players on and off the field.

"It just helps build character outside of football. It's not just football that we've got here. I felt like I got a time and a chance to do more than just coach football."

Newschannel 10 hit the road to Claude to find out more about the program, and see how the players were taking it.

Senior LB/RB Caleb Brown has seen the good times and the bad, and he thinks Pointer's plan is right on point.

"He really helps us out through our grades, or talking to teachers if we need help. Really he's stepped up and done more than just on the football field. He's really more of a guidance councilor sometimes than a coach."

Claude had 33 players report to Two-a-Days this summer, versus just 16 at this time last year.

Pointer has recently been named Athletic Director.
