New WWII Memorial at Texas Capitol

AUSTIN (AP) - The 830,000 Texans who served in World War II -- now have a memorial to them in Austin.

Ceremonies were held today for the new monument on the grounds of the Texas Capitol.

The memorial was dedicated on VJ Day, 62 years after Japan was defeated.

Governor Rick Perry, whose father was a bomber tailgunner, praised the bravery of the service people.

Some elderly veterans in the audience saluted as part of the tribute.

Records show about 22,000 Texans died in World War II.

The 17 foot tall granite memorial weighs 22 tons.
