School Shoe Support

The Salvation Army teamed up with the Amarillo Globe News to provide area families vouchers to purchase new shoes at Wal-Mart.

The vouchers are worth $25 and go to certain families that meet the Federal poverty level.

The vouchers can only be used for shoes and socks, but the Salvation Army's Executive Director Major Jim Waller thinks shoes are very important: "I remember when I was a kid, one of the worst things was going to school with holy shoes or no soles on them or whatever."

Alfredo Lopez is in the seventh grade and he knows it's cool to have new shoes.  "They make you feel better.  Instead of having ripped shoes, you can have better shoes," says Alfredo.

The vouchers give parents a chance to use the money on other necessities for the upcoming school year.  We talked with one woman, Regina Hernandez, who said she would use the saved money for clothes.

"It's going to help a lot.  I'm from Corpus, and they don't help as much as they do in Amarillo. Instead of one pair, I was able to get two pairs of shoes and socks.  It's awesome," she says.

The vouchers can still be obtained from 2101 Van Buren.  For more information call 373-6631.

They will continue the assistance until a target number is hit.
