Apartments in Amarillo are full and what's left over is either too expensive or located in unsafe neighborhoods. That's why families like the McKinleys are forced to live in extended stay motel because they haven't found a place they can call home.

"We're trying to find an apartment that we can afford to live in."

The family of four with one on the way have been searching for months with no luck. They have been staying at the extended going on nine months because they haven't found any affordable housing in Amarillo.

"It's very dificult because if they don't like you, or you don't make enough money they'll take your application fee and you're out that money"

The McKinleys say staying at the motel is financially and emotionally exhausting.

"It's been very difficult. You're crowded, there's no space, there's no privacy time."

Amarillo City Planner Kelley Shaw says relief is on the way.  A new multi family project will bring close to 500 new apartments to Amarillo sometime next year.

"The occupancy rates I would think would start to dip just a little bit."

As for the McKinley family they were putting in an application for an apartment today...and they're crossing their fingers, hoping they find a place to live.

The City Planners Office says people looking for a place to live can come to their offices or visit them online for the latest information on housing resources in Amarillo.
