17 Days Left to Clean Up Horace Mann Middle

Time is running out for the halls of Horace Mann Middle School to be ready for students to fill them. The campus has been under construction since it was set on fire on Independence Day. NewsChannel 10's Marissa Bagg explains how the district is working to prepare for kids to come back to school.

There are only 17 days left to clean-up the campus before the 07-08 school year starts... Nevertheless school officials are confident Horace Mann will be ready to educate Amarillo's youth.

"All construction will be completed by the time school starts... Maybe a few things here and there. For the most part the students shouldn't have any interruption whatsoever to the beginning of the school year," says Becky McIlraith, the spokeswoman AISD.

That's good news considering part of the school was trashed after a fire last month. The worst of the damage came by way of smoke.... Which filled the entire building, creating quite a mess. Knowing the extent of the damage, some parents in the area are weary the campus will be ready in time.

"Our kids shouldn't have to go to a school that's damaged at all, they should have it ready so there won't be any kind of danger for them. If they promise they're cleaning it up and it's coming from the supervisor who is in charge, I would probably feel safer," says Alex Chavez, father of two.

"We've had to reorder things and everything that's been needed has been reordered some of it hasn't come in yet but they expect it to be here at the beginning of school," says McIlraith.

We also spoke with the head custodian at the school, who says clean-up and repairs could even be finished before the 27th. The Amarillo Fire Department is still searching for those responsible for the arson.
