A Clovis girl wants to help her community by buying bullet resistant vests for police dogs. The K-9 unit plays a big role in helping the Clovis Police Department keep the community safe.

That's why 9-year-old Destiny Muller wants the dogs to be protected the same way the officers are. She has started a fund raiser called Protecting Our Protectors. She needs to raise $3,000 in order to buy the vests for the dogs. If you would like to help, stop by the Clovis Police Department and make a donation.

We also checked with the Amarillo Police Department and they do have some bullet resistant vests for their K-9 unit. They received theirs after a concerned student raised money for them.

Police dogs in both Amarillo and Clovis are considered real officers so if you ever mistreat one, you could face charges. Officials say if you taunt, torment, strike, or kill a police dog, you could face charges ranging from a class C misdemeanor to a 3rd degree felony.
