Plans to bring red light cameras to Amarillo are now in full swing. On Tuesday city commissioners voted to start contracting with American Traffic Solutions. The big issue they discussed is if Amarillo is a big enough city for red light cameras.
If the vendors set up four cameras it would cost them over $230,000 to run for one year. With each red light ticket at $75, over 3,000 penalties would have to be collected annually to cover equipment costs.
Extra money would go back to the city for other traffic safety programs. There is no word at this time on when the red light cameras could go up. City officials say they may be placed in the downtown area and the intersection of Amarillo Blvd. and Buchanan.
