New dairies are popping up all over the Dalhart area now that Hilmar is in town.

The Avi-Lanche Jersey dairy was built late last year for the sole purpose of producing milk for the cheese plant.

1200 cows are milked twice a day, that number is expected to double in October.

Richard Avila runs the dairy... He says Dalhart is a much more comfortable setting for his business, compared to the west coast.

"The dairy industry in California is a $41 billion dollar industry and they can't wait to see us get out of there. The support industries that come with dairies are amazing, the jobs they create, the cash flow for businesses...That's something they don't appreciate there and we're feeling like we're appreciated here," says Avila

The dairy cost 9-point-five million dollars to build and will employ about 25 people at full capacity.
