Residents of closing nursing home scramble for housing

"Locked units are scarce in the city of Amarillo, very scarce. One facility today told us they had a seven year wait," says John Sappington "Locked units are scarce in the city of Amarillo, very scarce. One facility today told us they had a seven year wait," says John Sappington

Some Amarillo families are scrambling to secure safe housing for their loved ones. It's made one local family furious. John Sappington and his wife visited his mother at the Palo Duro nursing home last night.  Sappington had no idea the place was going to close until he received a surprise phone call... after he left.

He had "been here and seen mother and not been told a word. "  That's why Sappington is fuming over the short notice that his mother and nearly seventy other nursing home residents must now find a new place to live. He says he found out from a nurse who doesn't even work at Palo Duro. "I told her that's not acceptable.. Said where do we go from here and she said I really don't know, so I got alot of "really don't knows" in the last 24 hours."

Workers tell us they're left in limbo too. Tametris March is worried. "Some of us we don't know what we're gonna do. We're gonna be kicked out of our houses, we're not gonna be able to pay our bills and our rent. We don't know what to do. It's hard."  A Medicare official tells us the owners decided to shut down the nursing home after a money crunch kept them from meeting health and safety standards.

That left Sappington struggling to find a new place that takes Alzheimer's patients like his mother.  "Locked units are scarce in the city of Amarillo. Very scarce. One facility today told us they had a seven year wait."  Sappington, found another nursing home in Pampa, and that's where he's settling in his mother.  We were not able to reach the Palo Duro owners.  The administrative manager at the nursing home declined to speak to us on camera, but insists she too had short notice that she would be out of a job herself.
