Fire Update at Horace Mann Middle School

Time is running out to get an Amarillo middle school open in time for classes to start in August.

Now the school district is finding out there is more clean-up to do than originally thought.

A July 4th fire that torched administrative offices at Horace Mann left smoke damage throughout the school.

Superintendent Rod Schroder says that they've found many desks and computers are so damaged by the smoke that they will have to be replaced, instead of just restored.

Schroder couldn't pinpoint how many but it's definitely increasing the cost of repair, still he says it could've been a lot worse: "If [the call had been reported fifteen minutes later], we probably would've lost that whole section of Mann."

No one was injured in the fire. The Amarillo fire department has ruled the blaze arson, but no arrests have been made.
