Food Bank Shortage

"Items we use to receive all the time, and we just haven't received this year," says Zach Wilson with the High Plains Food Bank "Items we use to receive all the time, and we just haven't received this year," says Zach Wilson with the High Plains Food Bank

A drastic shortage of food is being felt at the High Plains Food Bank. We spoke with one women who counts on those supplies.

Recent food recalls and a drop in local donations during the summer have all lead to the 10 year low the food bank is seeing.

Organizers say the low is causing them to cut back on food they give to individuals and other organizations. Zach Wilson with the High Plains Food Bank said, "Items we use to receive all the time, and we just haven't received this year."

We spoke with one women who counts on the supplies she receives food from the food bank though a third party organization.

Debbie says as a single mom with two kids those donations mean everything to her. "People that are doing good, dont really realize that there are some people that really struggle day to day just to feed their kids."

The food bank shelves are normally filled with 1.3 million pounds of food, but today less than half that, just 600 thousand pounds is all they have to offer.

Debbie says the food bank is important because it allows people who, maybe afraid to ask for help, to get what they need. "Its not some place where you come and you feel like you are being looked down upon. Its just a place where, you know we all need a helping hand sometimes"

After receiving the help she needed, debbie now gives back by handing out food to other members of the community. Something she wishes more people would take part in. "What a difference a few people can make in somebodies life."
