Cockfighting Banned in New Mexico

Cockfighting is illegal across all of New Mexico starting Friday.

Several different counties banned the fights back in March of 2007, but today's ban goes into effect for all counties.

Participating in the fights is a misdemeanor charge, but could result in a felony along with prison time for susequent offenses.

Cockfighters in New Mexico hope to file a lawsuit challenging the ban in the near future.

Louisiana is the only state where cockfighting is still allowed.
