Nils Wickner of Clayton, along with his wife, was honored by the community after 21 years of teaching art at both the high school and middle school.
Wickner is a nationally renowned painter himself and his students have been featured all over the country.
Wickner retired at the end of this school year, and he told Newschannel 10 that the community was the reason that he and his wife have stuck around for so long.
Both Wickner and his wife Lynda have been diagnosed with cancer; Nils with vocal chord cancer and Lynda with breast cancer. Both of them are doing well in remission and the town of Clayton was quick to jump to the aid of the couple in their time of need.
