Route 66 Deteriorating

"I have seen a lot of them go out. This is the 3rd store I have been in on 6th street in the last ten years and it S probably declined 50% at least." Scott Barlow "I have seen a lot of them go out. Get your kicks on Route 66 - while you can. The famous national landmark is now listed as one of the 100 most endangered landmarks in the world. The list says Route 66 is deteriorating due to abandonment.

Here today, gone tomorrow.  The historic highway, once booming with travelers and businesses, has now been abandoned by the development of new roads and methods of transportation, something business owners fear may lead to its demise.

Portions of Amarillo's stretch of the famous street are now bare where active businesses once stood. Business owners we spoke with say they have seen a 50% decrease in traffic on Route 66.

Enthusiast are now stepping in to try to save the road. The old route 66 association of Texas is asking people to hit the pavement this summer during its Route 66 cruise game, in hopes that bringing people to the strip, will jump start its come back.
