COPY-1 in 5 Amarilloans without health insurance

For some people in Amarillo, the price tag of a doctor's visit is out of the question.

Daniel Apple says he works day labor and can't afford regular medical attention.  A new study shows one in five local people take the same chances with healthcare.

"It's a hard way to go but that's the only way you have to look at it... right now, for me,"  he says.  Apple adds he's fortunate because he rarely gets sick.

But if he does, he'll go to the free clinic at the Tyler Street Resource Center, or head for an emergency room.

However, health officials warn the emergency room can be an expensive and time consuming alternative for people without personal doctors.
