Last Deployment for the 27th Fighter Wing

Today is a historic day for Cannon Air Force Base. The 27th Fighter Wing deployed a group of pilots who are now the last fighter squadron to leave the base before Cannon receives its new mission.

News Channel 10 Jennifer Best watched as the 522 Fighter Squadron prepared their F-16's and took off.  Something they'll never do from Cannon again.

For safety reasons officials can not tell us exactly how many people deployed today but did say it is a large group. They can not tell us where they are going at this time, but say they will join the pacific command.

522 Commander, Lt. Col. Tod Fingal said, "We will be doing some training with foreign countries that we are allies with and operations with US Navy, Marine Corps and other Air Force assets."

The group that left is expected to be gone several months. Once this deployment is over they'll go to different Fighter Squadrons all over the country.

As for Cannon's new mission, The Air Force Special Operations command is expected to take over in October.
