Procedures After the Report of a Bomb in School

Due to a bomb threat at an area high school, we have had some parents asking why the school was not evacuated.  So, we went out to find out the protocol for area schools in these type situations.  According to the Amarillo Independent School District Program Director of Communications Becky McIlraith, the schools have very elaborate procedures that they take, and each situation is handled individually.  According to McIlraith, the most important thing for parents to know is that evacuation is not always the best solution.  Communications Coordinator of Canyon ISD Laurie Cizon, said the same thing.  Both assured us that every situation is taken very seriously, and that the necessary steps are taken every time.

We also traveled to West Texas A and M University to see if a university handled the situation any differently, but it is essentially the same.  Director of Police Administration Meri Lyn Odell, told us the only main differences were that WT has its own police force, and that the president has final say on whether or not to evacuate.
