Panhandle Cities Declared Disaster Areas

The tornado ravaged cities of Cactus and Tulia will soon get  state funding to help their communities. Governor Rick Perry has declared them both state disaster areas.

Newschannel10 travelled to Tulia and spoke with city officials about the state funding. They are relieved tonight, and say that money will be essential as they rebuild.

City Manager Rick Crownover said "We need the help, we need the help we sure do. The city of Tulia doesn't have the wherewithal to do it all ourselves...it will help our community, it will help our citizens to get back some of the tangible things that they lost and give them a sense of community again and help their piece of mind."

The Governor's office says they have asked President Bush to issue federal declarations for Swisher and Moore counties, as well as for Maverick county, where a tornado killed six people Wednesday evening.

Construction is underway on Canyon's new aquatic park, which is still on schedule to open to the public on June 1st. The aquatic park is just a bunch of holes in the ground right now. But when the slides go up (by April 10th), people will start to see how close the project is to completion.
