NM Attorney general forms immigrant services unit

SANTA FE (AP) _ Attorney General Gary King has created an immigrant services unit under the consumer protection division.

The new unit will deal with such issues as consumer problems or illegal settlements that target immigrants. It also will handle wage claims and working condition issues.

King says the unit also will prosecute violations of the state Nationality Law Practice Act, which prohibits unauthorized practice of law by non-lawyers who claim to be immigration consultants.

He says the project recognizes the increasing diversity of New Mexico residents and will try to better protect often-vulnerable populations.
