Portales Man Dead in Jail

A Portales man sentenced to prison for taking more than 600-thousand dollars from an armored car service where he worked has hanged himself in his cell.

State Corrections Department spokeswoman Tia Bland says 23-year-old Scott Kirby used a bed sheet to hang himself at the Central New Mexico Correctional Facility.

Bland says he died at the prison's reception and diagnostic center.

Kirby was sentenced in February to six-and-a-half years in jail and was ordered to repay any money that wasn't recovered.

He pleaded guilty last October 12th to a second-degree felony charge of embezzlement over 20-thousand dollars.

Kirby had worked as an armored truck driver for an Albuquerque-based company.
