Shortage in Texas Prisons

A shortage at some prisons in Texas could be putting your safety at risk tonight according to one Texas lawmaker.

More than 30% of correctional officer jobs are unfilled at these prison units in Texas: Dalharts in Hartley County, Smith in Dawson County and Coffield and Beto, both in Anderson County.

Lawmakers say the vacancies increase the chance of breakouts or prison riots and that there's a public safety issue with the shortage.

However a Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokeswoman says that the prisons are secure.  The reasons for the unfilled positions, according to experts, are low salaries and location.
