DPS reports what is believed to be one of largest pot busts

AUSTIN (AP)  Troopers in South Texas have seized nearly four and a-half tons of marijuana from inside a tanker truck. Authorities say it's the second-largest pot bust by the Department of Public Safety during a routine traffic stop since 1997.

DPS recovered just under six tons of pot on July 16th of 2004 in Bee County. DPS spokesman Tom Vinger says in this week's case, the truck was stopped Monday on a highway about three miles east of Hebbronville.

Troopers say the truck had fictitious markings. An inspection revealed 846 plastic-wrapped bundles totaling 89-hundred pounds.

Authorities suspect the cargo was being taken from Starr County to Houston. Twenty-four-year-old Reynaldo Hovey Junior of La Joya was arrested on drug possession charges.
