Governor Richardson signs medical marijuana bill

SANTA FE  Governor Richardson has signed into law a bill that legalizes the use of marijuana by some patients whose doctors recommend it.

The program will be run by the state Department of Health, which will certify patients to participate.

The department will be in charge of obtaining and distributing the marijuana.

Patients could not grow their own. The governor told a news conference he expects a couple of hundred New Mexicans with chronic, serious medical conditions to be eligible for the drug.

He says it offers an alternative to relieve the suffering of patients with cancer, AIDS and other conditions.
