Cannon personnel help with tornado clean up

CLOVIS, N.M. Cannon Air Force Base canceled flying operations today so that personnel and heavy equipment from the base could help clean up what a string of tornadoes in southeastern New Mexico left behind.

Colonel Scott D. West is the commander of the 27th Fighter Wing at Cannon. He says about 450 military members are involved in the clean up.

West says Cannon also has sent front-end loaders, backhoes and dump trucks to help.

He says the efforts are a small way of saying thanks for the support Cannon airmen have always received from the community.

The tornadoes swept through communities along the New Mexico-Texas border late Friday, damaging homes, roads and businesses and snapping power lines.

The worst damage was reported in Clovis and the village of Logan.
