Cannon Budget Falls Short

An area senator fears money for planned expansion at Cannon Air Force Base falls short by tens of millions of dollars.

U.S. Senator Pete Domenici from New Mexico insists the Air force will need more than 72 million
dollars for the Special Operations Command to set up a western base at Cannon by October.

President Bush's fiscal year 2008 budget proposes just 9.2 million dollars for two construction projects at Cannon.

The base previously faced closure threats, but the Department of Defense announced last June the base would stay open and become the Air Force's 16th Special Operations Wing.
