Building Boom Slowing Down

Fewer new houses are going up around Amarillo. .

The number of building permits Amarillo issues is going down.

City Planner Kelly Shaw says 2006 showed the first drop in total building permits since the mid-nineties. He says it's no surprise local construction is finally slowing down. "we were expecting a slowdown at some point we were just wondering when it was gonna happen although we did not see any bursting of the bubble you know that alot of people were predicting."

City records show 758 permits issued in 2005 for new single family homes, with a value of about 138-million dollars.

In 2006 the city gave out just 608 permits valued at about 122-million.

Shaw says while the decline is not alarming, he expects the downward trend to continue for now.
