HPV Vaccine Maker to Abandon Lobbying Efforts

Pharmaceutical giant, Merck is abandoning its lobbying push to require school girls to get a vaccine preventing cervical cancer.

Governor Rick Perry signed an executive order that requires all school girls in Texas to receive the HPV vaccine before they go into the sixth grade.

A Perry spokesperson says he does not consider Merck's move as a setback.

"This isn't about the company. This is about business practices of this company and it's about this vaccine. This is historical vaccine that has not given us an opportunity to prevent cancer and this is what Governor Perry is very much focused on. "

Perry says the vaccine is about saving women's lives

Parents who do not want their daughters to receive the vaccine have the choice to opt out.
