Senator Files Bill to Help Poor Defendants in Appeals

State Senator Kel Seliger today filed a bill to increase the number of attorneys eligible to represent indigent defendants charged with capitol crimes in the appeals process.

Seliger wants the state to create regional selection committees to review the qualifications of appellate attorneys who represent poor clients.

Seliger says the goal of the legislation is to increase the number of lawyers who are eligible to represent defendants upon appeal by recognizing the different skill sets needed for trial and appellate attorneys.
