Dewhurst Wants More Prisons in Texas

Texas prisons are running out of space and officials are asking for as many as five-thousand more beds.

Lawmakers are seeking ways to find more room for violent offenders...without costly new construction.

Ideas include moving some inmates into drug treatment programs before they're paroled, and returning fewer parolees to prison for minor infractions.

Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst, who presides over the senate, says he supports building new prisons.

Dewhurst believes projected Texas population growth alone will create a need for more prison space.
