The search for a new Amarillo police chief can legally stay within city limits.

That's according to City Manager Alan Taylor.

He notes the city's charter allows him to nominate a new chief without a nationwide search.

Taylor says no law requires him to interview a certain number of people or seek minority applicants.

As we first told you Thursday on NightCast, Taylor is looking at the department's two assistant chiefs, Perry Gilmore and Robert Taylor,  to replace Chief Jerry Neal, who will officially retire March 31st.
