Governor Wants to Outlaw Cockfighting

Governor Richardson will push the next state legislature to ban cockfighting in New Mexico.

Richardson says he would support a ban and would actively try to get the proposal approved by lawmakers.

New Mexico and Louisiana are the only states that still allow cockfighting.

Proposals to ban the activity have repeatedly failed in the legislature in the past.

Democratic Senator Mary Jane Garcia of Dona Ana says she will sponsor a measure to outlaw cockfighting.

Richardson made his announcement at a news conference in which he outlined several animal protection proposals.
