Winter's Worst is Over...for Now

Looks like the worst is over from our latest winter storm. Although you could still see a few snow showers tonight, the bulk of the snow has lifted north of the area. The conditions will improve greatly by tomorrow, but it'll still be chilly with highs in the upper 30s.

Transportation officials opened I-40 this morning shortly before 8:00.

For the most part, traffic was flowing smoothly,a few tractor trailers had some problems but most were able to make it through. The Department of Public Safety has reported no serious accidents along I-40 since it re-opened.

The icy conditions has caused 79 accidents in the Amarillo area... Amarillo police tell us that is the official number from Tuesday at 6:00 in the morning through this afternoon.

Police say the majority of the accidents were caused by motorists driving too fast in the inclement weather...causing their vehicles to spin out of control.

Police also encourage drivers to drive below the speed limit until all roadways are back to normal.
