School Absences Double in Wake of Raid

Hundreds of students in the Dumas Independent School District were absent today following Tuesday's illegal immigration raid.

In fact, the number of absentees today was double the amount the school district usually has.
286 students were counted absent today. On average there are about 140 students absent.

But the school district will not confirm if the increase is related to the Swift plant raid.

Out of the 5 elementary schools...there were more than 200 children absent. Cactus Elementary had the most students missing with 62. At Dumas Junior High...21 students did not show up to school today. The most absentees were at Dumas High School with 63.

Even though there was a rise in absentees today...the school district's superintendent says they are continuing to focus on the education of the children.

The school district is also posting signs at the campuses with information on how families can get assistance.
