A Clovis dentist who was eligible for the death sentence will now serve life plus 27-years in prison.

According to District Attorney Matthew Chandler, James Smith was given the sentence today in exchange for his guilty plea in the December 2005 murder of 30-year old, mother, Laura McNaughton.

McNaughton's body was discovered by hunters on a rural Curry County road.

Medical investigators say the body had injuries consistent with sexual assault.
