Prisons Reach New Records

Chances are you know someone in prison, on parole, or on probation. The Department of Justice now says a record seven million people were in the prison system in 2005...but that record didn't happen over night.

An estimated one in 32 adults are in the prison system, that's three percent of the entire country's adult population.

The increase in 2005 was only two percent, the same as in 2004. Prison releases are increasing, but admissions are increasing more.

From 1995 to 2003, inmates in federal prison for drug offenses have accounted for 49% of total prison population growth.

Here in Amarillo our numbers remain about the same as well, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice there was only one more inmate in 2005 at the Neal unit than the previous year. At the Clements unit the number actually decreased by more than one-hundred.
