After a 13 month tour of duty in Iraq, a local soldier is honored today by students at Amarillo's Will Rogers Elementary School.

Sergeant Pete Garrido of the United States Army was welcomed home by more than 100 students, Mayor Debra McCartt, and a choir singing "God Bless America."

Garrido says he was not expecting such a warm reception from the Amarillo community.

"I expected to come and see my son's class, and it turns out it's basically the whole school. It's very surprising, I wasn't expecting all this. My wife didn't know about this either, it's surprising to her too what happened today."

Garrido is no stranger to Will Rogers Elementary, his son is a first grader there and his wife teaches kindergarten.
