1 man dead, 1 arrested following overnight motorcycle racing accident

AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - 1 man has died due to injuries following an overnight motorcycle accident.

Thursday around 10:40 p.m., police were dispatched to the intersection of NE 19th Ave. and N. Manhattan on a crash involving two motorcycles.

Sammy DeLeon had been westbound on NE 19th approaching N. Manhattan on a Honda Motorcycle.

Racing him westbound on NE 19th, was Stephen Lee Philpot II on Yamaha Motorcycle. The Yamaha and the Honda collided.

DeLeon was transported to the hospital and has died of his injuries. Justice of the Peace Hermann has ordered an autopsy.

Philpot attempted to flee the scene but was captured. When arrested, Philpot was in possession of marijuana and THC wax.

He was later booked into Potter County Detention Center for racing causing serious bodily injury, accident causing serious bodily injury, possession of marijuana and possession of controlled substance.

Speed and no helmet were factors in this collision.

The incident is being investigated by the Traffic Investigation Squad of the Amarillo Police Department.
