AGS finds out status of grant soon; More direct flights could be on the way

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

Could Augusta Regional Airport see more direct flights other than from Charlotte & Atlanta? The Airport applied for a special grant that could start the process of adding more carriers.

In the coming weeks, a decision is expected to be announced whether a small grant has been awarded to the airport, which could change all of that.

"A lot more convenient as opposed to having to travel to Columbia, Charlotte, and Atlanta," says Carl Johnson.

The Small Community Air Service Grant gives money to smaller airports anywhere from $250,000 to nearly $1M to attract potential carriers.

"It's a step in the right direction, I think they should. It will attract more business, definitely," says Johnson.

The first option on the application the airport submitted was Washington, D.C.

Many remember that was a direct flight you could have taken out of Augusta but it ended back in 2014 when US Airways merged with American Airlines. With Cybersecurity quickly becoming the focal point of the CSRA, many say it's a no-brainer.

"Number one is consistent with the volume of business that's increasing here and the people that are coming here from up north and around the world," says Hayes.

With an announcement expected in the coming weeks, this could be another change in the CSRA that can have a direct impact on Cyber.

If the airport is awarded this grant, there's no guarantee it can happen but officials are very confident.

Election day is Tuesday, July 23. Over 200,000 people went to the polls in the last two weeks to vote early. Columbia County was ranked number six in the state for total early voter turnout. Of the 200,000 people who came out, over 160,000 of them were casting ballots for the Republican Party. That might be because of the races on the ballots.
