LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

A Lubbock Uber driver recalls the moment he said enough after a trip that ended with him being assaulted just after midnight on July 8.

"I just pulled over and told them to get out of my car," says Roosevelt Portee Jr.

Portee says he picked nine people up from one location and took them to Café J where one of the passengers then got in his face and began cursing at him, eventually having to be restrained.

He says that after heading to another location, a few of his passengers, who were white, used racial slurs and cursed at him. That's when he pulled the vehicle over and told everyone to get out.

After opening one of the doors, he says he was pushed and assaulted. This sent Portee to the hospital with a broken nose, a cut above his eye, and a laceration on his knee.

According to the Lubbock Police Department, the initial reports say there was a lot of "cussing." The racial slurs mentioned by the victim were not mentioned in the original police report, however, the incident is still under investigation.

I asked Portee if the people who assaulted him had been arrested.

"No, not at this time."

The passengers all fled the scene before Portee called police.

He says he was just trying to keep his riders safe.

"All I was trying to do was provide a service for the kids because they get out there, they drink, and some of them are irresponsible; getting in the car, trying to drink, after drinking and driving…mess around and kill someone. So, I was just trying to provide a service to keep them safe."
