ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Tuesday, June 19, marks Juneteenth.

Juneteenth commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States on June 19, 1865.

This is when Union soldiers informed slaves in Texas that they were free, two and a half years after the passing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

An Albany organization wants to educate people of the history and for people to have a good time doing it.

Men United of Albany is hosting an event on Saturday, and Congressman Sanford Bishop is expected to make an appearance.

One of the organizers, Bennie Russell, says there will be plenty of activities for children and adults including food, spoken word, bounce houses, and music.

"Sometimes as minorities or African Americans, we'll celebrate the 4th of July, we'll celebrate Cinco de Mayo, but we forget to celebrate our own freedom and independence,"  said Russell.

If you would like to go to the family-friendly event, you can go by the American Legion post 512 on 815 Willie Pitts JR Rd. from 10-7 on Saturday, June 16.
