AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - When the summer heat builds as it has lately, sometimes the only way to take the edge off is with a nice, cool, refreshing drink.
I have some good news.
K and N Root Beer recently celebrated their 50th anniversary of serving fresh brewed, ice cold root beer. Today, I visited with manager Donna Barton.
Donna tells us about the world of root beer and how she makes it.
"Well every morning I come in, actually it's kind of dull, nothing exciting about it, but I make about 12 gallons of water," she said. "This is a three-gallon bucket of water with 64 ounces of syrup that I get from my concentrate that I make once a week. And I just pour this into the water like so to mix it, pour it into this bucket, and I have to have my switch up of my carbonator going.
It actually pumps the root beer and mixes it with the CO2. It releases it into a hose that goes around the building and into an ice bank and then out of our spigot."
According to Donna, they are the only business in Amarillo brewing root beer.
"Not that I know of, so I think we have a patent on this," she said. "We have been doing it a long time."
For the past 50 years, K and N Root Beer has been serving the community. Donna told us a little bit about how she entered the root beer business.
"I was friends with their daughter, Sue Hill, that was working here at the time," she said. "One evening I stopped by here to eat and she got really busy and said, 'Hey, do you know how to run a cash register?' I said, 'Yep,' and she said, 'Help!' And it kind of began from there.
Now, I have been here all this time and I love it. I really love it."
Donna says that the community of Amarillo loves root beer, so it's easy to love her job.
"Everybody loves it," she said. "Amarillo just loves this root beer."
Well it looks like we might just be in for a long, hot summer, but cold root beer is good news. No, that's really good news.
