AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - With more storefronts popping up and fewer vacancies reported, business is growing at Westgate Mall, according to the general manager.
"Things are really good here," said Brian Giffin, general manager at Westgate.
Many existing stores are expanding into new spaces as businesses grow.
"We have a number of stores that are expanding," said Giffin. "Some are doing remodeling, renovations."
Giffin says a former kiosk shop, Brow Art, grew enough to expand into a storefront.
Other shops seeing either expansions or renovations include Kay Jewelers, Sunglass Hut and Hollister, which just had a building permit approved for $315,000 in renovations.
New stores to the mall and area are also in the works.
"We're working with a number of stores that would consider coming into Amarillo," said Giffin. "We're very hopeful we can get a few more spaces filled."
Going beyond brand-name stores, the mall is also seeing success in locally-owned businesses.
"We also have a lot of specialty retailers that are more localized, family-owned from around the area," said Kaitlyn Pillow, marketing manager at Westgate. "Some come from Lubbock, Hereford, Borger, and it's really great to see how well they perform here."
Pillow and Giffin say the sense of community in Amarillo has helped businesses continue success.
"Amarillo and the Panhandle is so community-driven that that's one of the things we definitely benefit more from than say Lubbock or Dallas," said Pillow. "We have a lot of hometown, you really know who the managers are because they're really involved with the community and really helping the community to succeed in their retail businesses."
"Our shoppers come from all over the Panhandle, from way north, east, west, and even to the south, so we really do receive great support from the community," said Giffin.
With that community support, Westgate can see more businesses grow and thrive for years to come.
