Xcel Energy is reminding residents how to report outages and how to stay safe in the case of a power disruption.

If you have an outage due to a storm, Xcel advises that you assume an electric line, even one that is on or near the ground, is energized and dangerous. Never touch or move a downed power line.

If you come across a downed power line, Xcel advises that you leave the area and report it by calling 1-800-895-1999.

In the case that heavy storm damage leads to long-duration outages, food in the refrigerator can stay cool up to four hours if the door is kept closed. However, you should stockpile nonperishable items if your power remains off longer.

It is also a good idea to keep flashlights ready with fresh batteries.

If you or a family member depend on life support systems, you should discuss an evacuation plan and be prepared to leave. If you are sensitive to heat, consider options for finding a cool location until service is restored.
