AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - Police are alerting residents of the dangers in crossing railroad tracks while crossing gates are down.
The Amarillo Police Department has been made aware of cars disregarding lowered railroad crossing gates. On surveillance video from April 28, between 1:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., 10 cars were seen crossing tracks while crossing gates were down.
In 2017, statistics show that Texas had 232 collisions at railroad crossings with 13 deaths. In Amarillo, there was one collision that resulted in a death.
According to the Amarillo Police Department, a driver is 40 times more likely to be killed in a collision with a train than in a collision with another car.
It is also a misdemeanor offense to drive around, under or through a crossing gate or barrier while the gate is closed, being closed or being opened. This means you could be fined no less than $50 and no more than $200.
