CANYON, TX (KFDA) - West Texas A&M University school officials, students and alumni gathered to break ground for the university's new on-campus Buffalo Stadium.
"It's a testimony to WT, hard work, teamwork and committing to something larger than yourself. I'm glad to be just a small part of this momentous occasion," said President for West Texas A&M University Dr. Walter Wendler.
Dr. Wendler said he believes this new addition will increase not only student engagement and involvement but also enrollment and retention.
"This stadium will create a sense of place, a sense of activity and purpose," said Wendler. "It's about football, but it's more than football and I really do believe it's going to make a difference."
The idea of an on-campus stadium first came to be in March of 2016 when students voted in favor of funding the project through an increase in the student athletic fee.
"It's being able to kind of share a vision and get students to buy in on that vision, even if it does require a little bit of a cost," said WT Student Body President Chandler Huddleston. "This movement is about what can we do for future students; how can we make WT a better place."
The first football game in the new Buffalo Stadium is scheduled for September 7th of 2019.
