"Time happens and time has no mercy on anyone if it gets neglected so this has been neglected long enough,” said pastor Manny De Los Santos. “It's time for us to come in and say, 'you know what? We're going to make it better.'"

Next door to the Power Church on SE 10th and Roberts sits a vacant lot. Buildings are shuttered, trash is in piles, windows are broken and belongings are left behind.

"I've seen a lot of different buildings that are similar to what's next door and I saw how much of an attraction it was to some negative activity,” said pastor Aaron De Los Santos.

Together, the two brothers, both pastors at the church, are combining forces with their congregation and community to turn this area of Barrio into positive activity.

"We just looked to each other as a church and said that's something we have to do for our community,” said Aaron De Los Santos.

Buying that vacant lot next door, the Power Church plans to level it, building a new community-driven center from the ground up.

"When we knock it down, we're going to give them opportunities to come get GEDs, come find some housing and use our computers to find housing, find jobs, kind of better their life,” said Manny De Los Santos. “That's the goal."

While a completion date for the project is not yet set, the church looks forward to the new opportunities it will bring.

"We definitely are looking forward to when them walls, all the walls will come down,” said Aaron De Los Santos. "It's going to open up the opportunities for us to reach more of the community and offer help to people who need help."

"It beautifies Amarillo, so it doesn't just do something great for the neighborhood, it does something great for the city,” said Manny De Los Santos. “A city is only as strong as its weakest neighborhood. So we've got to empower our neighborhood, empower our community."

As the neighborhood continues to change, the Power Church plans to be there every step of the way.
